William Walker's Stag Weekend - July 2003, York
Bill's rite of passage took place in York, where we stayed in the Youth Hotel.
The hotel charged £16 per night per person, and we therefore didn't expect
too much. It did not disappoint in this respect.
The weekend started early Friday evening, and soon descended into a
drink-fest leaving no time for any food. A few of us braved a kebab and
regretted it the next morning. At Bill's request a few of us joined him in a
gay bar, where we drank cloudy banana bear and some other very odd drinks.
The weather was stunning on Saturday and we headed off to York
Races. This was a pretty top afternoon, most of the time was spent in the Champagne
area, rather than near the horses.
Saturday evening was the customary visit pubs / eat meal etc. Progress was
slowed by Bill donning the traditional Spook ball-and-chain. Amazingly we
were allowed in the restaurant and some pubs with Bill clanking along,
breaking paving stones etc. We visited the fountain in York and unfortunately the key for the ball and
chain fell in. Bill became concerned and climbed in
after it. He couldn't find the key, but took a well earned
rest "bidet" style, sitting on the water jets. Shortly after this Bill tried to get himself arrested, but the police just laughed at
him. An evil bouncer denied us access to one of York's
nite-clubs so Bill wanted to visit the gay bar again.
To Bill's poor fortune, the only seats available were at the top of a rickety spiral
staircase which Bill clanked noisily up. After kicking out time, Bill refused any help to carry
the ball and chain -
it took over an hour to travel less than half a mile back to the hotel.
Bill et al then tried to impress a hen-party in the hotel kitchen, but to no
avail. Bill had to make do with Tony instead (see pictures). It became apparent at this time that Bill would have to sleep wearing the
ball and chain. He reluctantly retired to bed, sleeping in his clothes
that were still wet from the fountain. By some miracle a key for the ball and chain was found
in the morning and Bill was released
in time for breakfast.
It was a great weekend to mark the passage of Bill towards marriage. I've
put a few pictures together to remind people of the key events. If you
